Why Antique Beds Are Often Shorter than Modern Mattress Sizes

Antique beds are prized for their craftsmanship and timeless elegance. But anyone who has tried fitting a modern mattress into an antique bed frame will quickly realize that their mattress won’t be a perfect match for their heirloom bed.

Today, we’ll explore the historical reasons for the smaller dimensions of antique beds and how modern sleepers can adapt their vintage frames for everyday use.

Historical Sleep Habits: Sleeping Upright and Biphasic Sleep

Before the 20th century, sleep looked different from what it is today. People slept fewer hours at a time, which is quite unlike the 8 hours a night sleep we’re used to. They would sleep in two shifts and spend less time fully stretched out in a bed.

Many individuals would even sleep propped up with bolsters and pillows, resting in a semi-upright position. This sleep position was thought to aid digestion, reduce breathing issues, and prevent “bad air” from settling in the chest.

Because people didn’t fully stretch out on their beds, their frames were built shorter to accommodate their sleep habits.

People Back Then Weren’t Quite as Tall

The average adult back in the 17th-19th century varied across regions. However, male adults used to measure around 5’5.5” and 5’1” for women. From food shortages to rampant illnesses, the average adult was significantly shorter than today’s population. As a result, beds didn’t need to match the long dimensions of modern-day queen or king beds.

Huge Bedrooms Weren’t Common in Homes Before

Unless an individual was wealthy, they would live in smaller homes or shared living spaces with other families. Compared to modern homes with spacious master suites, historical bedrooms were modest in size. Also, a room with a large square footage would be really expensive to heat in the cold winter months.

With shorter and narrower beds, people could maximize the size of their bedroom’s floor area, organize their furniture easily, and move around better within their compact rooms.

Aside from bedroom space, bedding was another factor people had to consider. Since bedding materials were expensive and labor-intensive to craft, people would rather have beds that didn’t require huge bed linens.

The Transformation to Modern Standardized Mattress Sizes

The introduction and subsequent popularity of standardized mattress sizes didn’t occur until the early to mid-20th century. As mattress manufacturing became industrialized, bedding companies introduced consistent dimensions that we’re now all familiar with:

  • Twin (38” x 75”)
  • Full (54” x 75”)
  • Queen (60” x 80”)
  • King (76” x 80”)

These modern sizes emphasized comfort, sleeping space, and compatibility with mass-produced sheets and bed frames. Antique beds, which were built long before these standards, naturally don’t match up. Trying to use modern mattresses on these historical frames would lead to gaps, overhang, or mismatched proportions.

Adapting Your Antique Bed for Modern Comfort

Antique beds are often shorter and narrower than the standard sizes we use today, which means that to find a mattress that fits, you need to look into custom made antique bed mattresses.

With a custom sized mattress for your antique bed, you can preserve your antique frame’s aesthetics and enjoy restful sleep.

To order a custom three quarter mattress, accurately measure the interior dimensions of your bed. Then, it’s time to select the appropriate mattress material from the custom mattress manufacturer’s offerings.  Typically, you’ll choose from foam, latex, pocket coils, or a hybrid option that combines any of the materials.

Your cozy ¾ mattress also won’t be complete without tailored bedding made from Egyptian cotton and a mattress protector to keep your new mattress in top shape.
